Conservation Values

As a remnant of the once great San Joaquin Valley grasslands, the Carrizo Plain harbors species endemic to those grasslands, including the San Joaquin Kit fox, Blunt-nosed Leopard Lizard, and Giant Kangaroo Rat. The Carrizo is critical core habitat for these species and many others since they have been elsewhere largely displaced by agriculture and development and face many continuing threats in their other core habitat areas.
